Organist/Church Musician (Part Time)
Job Summary
Church musician will provide music and musical leadership at the regular Sunday services of the Parish, and for Holy Week, Christmas and the following additional services that are part of Parish’s liturgical custom and cycle, Advent Lessons and Carols, Ash Wednesday as well as other events and services as needed. Musician will assist the Rector in the selection of hymns, anthems, and service music appropriate to worship themes and liturgical seasons. Provide music for other occasions as requested such as weddings & funerals. Work in cooperation with fellow staff members. Continue to grow in musicianship. The ideal candidate will provide direction for a seasonal choir, handbells and other musical groups as needed and work to develop, and encourage, small ensembles, soloists and other talented musicians within the congregation.
St. John’s has a 2007, three manual Rodgers Allegiant digital organ.

Qualifications
- Knowledge of church music and organ repertoire for church services. Experience within the Episcopal/Anglican tradition preferred or willingness to learn
- Proficiency in organ and piano.
- Experience directing a choir or ensemble (ideal)
- Self-motivated with a collegial style of leadership
Essential Functions
- Play a wide variety of hymns and ability to transpose hymns as required
- Accompany soloists, choirs and instrumentalists in rehearsals and services
- Work cooperatively with others—adults, youth, children, and church staff
- Direct bell choir, vocal choir(s) and outside musicians as required
- Prepare and play prelude, hymns, offertory transition or anthem, and postlude
Responsibilities
- Provides or provides for, all music during services, accompanies and (ideally) conducts the choir(s)
- Responsible for the administration and expenditure of the music budget.
- Maintains a regular weekly rehearsal schedule for self and any additional musicians
- Accompaniment for and/or directing choral rehearsals, rehearsing with other musicians or soloists, and preparing for all such rehearsals
- Selecting music to meet special and seasonal needs during the liturgical year.
- Musician shall obtain all necessary permissions and authorizations for all copyrighted materials (Our parish pays for a complete OneLicense.net subscription, musician is responsible for requesting renewal)
- Consulting with families for weddings and funerals (additional compensation)
- Pursuing additional training, academic credit; private study of organ, piano, other instruments; composition studies (St. John’s provides a continuing education budget and budget for new music)
- Responsible for the choir library and the musical instruments of the Parish. Musician shall make any necessary arrangements for the care and maintenance of the instruments in the Parish at the expense of the Parish.
- Arranging for music (musicians) during times of absence.
Terms & Compensation
- Part time, salaried position requiring an average of 9-12 hours per week. Additional hours required for special services (Christmas Eve, Holy Week, Easter, Lesson & Carols, etc.)
- Position to be reviewed and renewed annually
- Salary is $805 per month ($10,200 per year)
- 4 Sundays off per year
- $250 towards continuing education per year
- Employment requires 3 references, completion of relevant Safe Church modules, approval by the Vestry, a complete and satisfactory background check, and acceptance of an official offer from the church
